Hey!

Well. ok this is an interesting question. But as far as i know, it depends really. It’s not always the autism, autistic kids are … believe it or not… human as well. My brother misbehaves stacks, but half the time its because he’s just being cheeky, if you like. He knows we don’t like certain things, so he will do them to spite us, or because he thinks its amusing. In fact, my theory is that he’s actually a lot smarter than anyone gives him credit for, and that he any misbehaving is his way of getting a kick out of life.

That, however, is just my bro. I’m not sure what type of autism you’re dealing with here, (yes, there are many types as far as I know) and you may be dealing with a different type of autism (my brother’s case, thankfully, is relatively mild, but still serious enough to drive our family crazy haha…)

Yeah. I guess the main point is that autistic people are human too. They might just be playing around, or doing it to spite you =]

Hi!

Unfortunately at the moment due to recent lack of time, my blog only delves as deep as my life experiences go. My brother is STILL in puberty (god help the both of us)

But I suspect we need only be strong for as long as a normal person would need to get over their puberty. Autistic people are, after all normal people, they just percieve the world and act differently. So yes, hopefully towards the end of the teenage years?

Anyway I really hope that you’re son gets better!

ANNOYING HABITS NO.5: Soap and shampoo.

Yo,

So recently, I have had ENOUGH with one of my brother’s habits. What he likes to do is pour out all shampoos and soap dispensers, and fill them with water. Now that might not seem very annoying at first, but trust me, after the 10000th time, it starts to get on your nerves a bit. ALSO. he will often pour them away when their brand new… WHAT A WASTE ASDJFKSJFD

Anyway. Recently I decided I would try and outwit him, by supergluing the screwcap of our soap dispenser onto the actual bottle itself. Well. It worked for a few days, and then he FINALLY got it open and to his own perverted glee poured out the contents and filled it with water. (forgive my word choice, I’m still annoyed LOL)

Well. Long story short, I blew my top at him, he blew his top at me (refer to annoying habit no.4) and yeah. Called in the higher powers, and they broke it up. sigh.

Will have to come up with a better solution. e.g. locking away our soap and shampoo, or just not letting him shower. LOL.

Got any suggestions? =S

Hey guys been a while, but im back =D

anyway, you can ask any parent, What is the worst phase about bringing up a kid. I’m sure everyone you ask will be different, but there is going to be, FOR SURE, one phase that will stick out more than the rest.

The rebellious teenager years.

So you thought THAT was bad. Guess what’s worse than that. An autistic kid going through that phase. LOL.

God help me

So my bro is turning 17 at the end of this year, so he’s definately in that phase where you go through puberty, and make a big deal about not listening to anyone else and deciding that you are your own king, if not everyone else’s

The problem is with that at least with normal kids, you can get SOME insight as to why they are behaving that way. You can just ask them “OMFGHSDKASFHSALKHF Y ARE U SO ANNOYING”. Autistic kids? not quite as simple. Lets just say if you did that, you would get an outburst in your face.

So far: my best tactics to avoid this are:

1) Prevention. Try not to start anything if you can avoid it. LOL.

2) Ignore them. This is for when theyve just started, Don’t stoke the fire any more than you have or it’ll burn even brighter, if you get what i mean

3) Call on the higher powers. e.g. parents. If you are the higher power, good luck . LOL

4) if their REALLY far gone and raging, Isolate urself/the source of their irritation away from them. They’ll get tired eventually and stop haha

YEP. Today i took the full brunt of my Dad’s rage regarding a certain toilet in our house. You see, my brother has an insatiable desire to collect as many tissues as he can.. ANY TISSUES. And chuck them in the toilets. I don’t know why… probably because its like posting them, but in the safety of your own house HAHA. Kinda like internet shopping I guess ROFL.

SO YES. there’s this particular one that he likes to stuff with tissues. I’s because its the ensuite to my parents bedroom, so it’s nice and secluded and he can feel safe from us intruding in on his well… addiction haha.

So i had an exam today, and I was SLIGHTLY stressed out. So i had a lapse of memory and since that one is closer, I used it. Turns out it blocked. Guess who got all the blame? UHUH. me.

Sigh. i get it that its annoying… but Im not so sure that its fair to treat me like the sole cause of the blockage. whatever. Took the bullet for my bro (y) all good.

But my brother is also pretty sweet. If you ask him to do small favours for you, he does them =] Especially if he senses that you’re angry at him because he did something else (See annoying habits LOL)

Yeah. So I caught him sneaking into my room. So I was like RAWWRRRRR AHSKGHSAGKDAHSK. and he legged it. then at dinner i was like STANLEYYY take my bowl over please. and he did =] heeheh. nice brothers are nice. when their nice =]

Just in case u guys think I’m mega whingey and negative about autistic people, I am also going to include positive things about autistic siblings. You know, to give a well rounded and more realistic account.

My bro can be pretty cute. LOL. no, not in the gay incest way. i mean like as a person overall. My dad was berating him for going into his room and pillaging it. And then posting stuff. So he was about to joke smack him (he never really actually hits him dw) and lets him go when my bro says sorry. So my brother runs out of arm’s reach and starts doing posting actions. ROFLROFL!!! watahead!

yeh. this is just one moment where ur just like LOLLL.

ANNOYING HABITS NO.3: One mans trash is another’s treasure

Here’s yet another snapshot of one of my brother’s habits =]

HE LOVES TO COLLECT TRASH. So you might be asking “HUH sam you’re not serious? TRASH? of all things?” but yes I’m serious. Remember how i told u how he loves to shred paper? YEP. well he has to collect that paper first to shred it. This includes a variety of scrap paper, fliers, brochures, magazines, newspapers and so on. He also collects anything plastic and well… anything that you can cut with scissors. THERE IS WAY TOO MUCH TOO LIST.

There was also a point where he loved to display his treasure trove on our dining table, where we eat all our meals. AND if we attempted to clear the table he would kick a massive fuss. I still remember a time where I cleared the table to have a snack during the night when he was asleep. The next morning he raided my room and attempted to attack LOLOL!

o well… at least recently he hasnt been doing it. My mum gave him a box for all his treasure… >.>

ok on the bright side at least we dont have to worry about trash anymore? =3

So yes. Annoying habit number 2 is when my brother shreds paper. ANY PAPER HE CAN LAY HIS HANDS ON. Ok granted that its not as bad as it used to be, but its still pretty bad. Even if its an important document e.g. major assignments, bank statements and credit card statements, investment stuff for my dad, and various other stuff, if its lying around, YOU CAN BET YOU’RE ASS as soon as you turn around it’ll be gone.

And shredded. and in the bin. LOL. He only got better when we forced him to tape back together important documents that we needed. Now he only shreds stuff we hand him (y). Mind you, as long as he’s shredding stuff, he doesn’t care what else is happening. Could be the house on fire, a famine or even armageddon and he wouldnt care.

O WELL. at least it makes him happy … right? =]

So… I think one of the recurring things that I want to do is regularly post annoying habits my brother has. This way, I get to vent, and u get a snapshot of life with an autistic bro. Deal? DEAL! (mind that all these are just small… but when you stack them all TOGETHER… LOL… rage!!! HAHA)

The first thing that comes to mind is my brothers annoying habit of “posting”. Let me explain. Basically “posting” is when one pretends to be a postman and … well… “posts” thin objects into thin cracks, or just plain down big holes. Common example is a drain.

Heres the thing. I left my room unguarded for ONE second. ok… minute… LOL. make that a few minutes. but the point is it was unguarded for not that long, and when i returned my jar on my desk which houses my pens is EMPTY. like… EVERY PEN I OWN. including favourite ones =[

But looking back a few decades, you see ADHD never existed. The way I see it, ADHD is just an overdose of sugar. My brother has ADHD. When we were younger, we two were exactly alike. I stopped eating so much candy and fast food, while he continued to eat it. About two years ago, he was “diagnosed” with it. T.T

I don’t eat much candy or fast food, and I have ADHD. I honestly think that a lot of things have surfaced in recent decades that weren’t there before. One hundred years ago, were there as many cancer-stricken people as there are today? What about AIDS or other STDs? When my mother was a child, she barely knew any kids that had glasses or wore braces. Now almost every child has either or both. Even other mental disabilities, such as autism, were unheard of in such numbers even twenty years ago. What about people in the past who displayed symptoms of ADHD? Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Edison, Henry David Thoreau, Leo Tolstoy, Vincent van Gogh, all had ADHD characteristics. I’m not trying to start a fight or anything, and I’m not attacking you personally, but ADHD definitely exists. It may be diagnosed incorrectly quite often, but nevertheless, it’s not imaginary or fake.

So having posted about my AUTISTIC brother, you are probably wandering (at no fault of your own): “Sam… hate to ask after you’re last post… but… WHAT IS AUTISM?!”

Here. I’ll save you the trouble =] I googled it and this picture seemed to have most of the things to do with autism down pat.

my brother is a combination of around half of those things. Though they missed a couple. Which is why i think it’s hard to define autism as such. Their people too! its like asking someone to define their friend or to define yourself. It’s hard because everyone is so different.

But you know what, I’ll try for all of you. HERE is the very generic definition that i give everyone :

“Autism is when they behave, communicate and act very differently to others”

We’ll just leave that as nuff said. shall we =]

So… seriously… There is one topic that i have realised is quite an awkward one for me and my friends everytime they bring it up.

No. dont worry. It’s nothing sexual. Its not even stupid. It’s in fact quite normal. One of the most normal topics you can think of.

“Do you have any siblings?”

Why would that be awkward though? Well. any Sherlock Holmes’ proteges in our midst would have probably figured out that it has to do with my brother =P

It’s because my brother is autistic. So when faced with this question, i am faced with many decisions about what I should do.

1) Should i lie?! NO I DONT HAVE A BROTHER =0 (lol fun fact: my mum and dad wish i was the only child)
PROS:At least I don’t have to explain all this autism to everyone. Usually I’m not good with definitions on the spot… but these days defining autism doesn’t occur on the spot any more (It’s happened that much)
CONS: When they find out… its even more awkward. OO HIM? uhhh must’ve adopted him today O__O” Why is he acting so weird? FUNNY STORY THAT.

2) Just act as if he’s perfectly normal. (I’ll admit… i HAVE done this one before. cbf explaining and everything). This approach has the same pros and cons as the above… except at least they know i have a sibling. rite =P

3) Tell them the truth.
PROS: It’s all out there~ the cards have all been revealed.
CONS: The awkward silence when they know the truth. And have no idea what to say in return. Or when they just start asking awkward questions.

“yeh. he’s good…”

LOL. I’m just saying~ but you get the point. Man. I have so much stuff to write about this. I’ll keep you guys posted =]
